Follow Friday (6)

Follow Friday is a weekly meme hosted by Rachel at www.parajunkee.com and Alison at www.alisoncanread.com.

If you could change the ending of any book (or series), which book would you choose?  Why and to what?

I can think two series right off the bat.  First would be Harry Potter.  I would eliminate the epilogue because it just didn't feel right.  All of JK Rowling's other books had open endings; why did Deathly Hallows have to spell out every single detail?!  I liked that line about having too much trouble in a life, or whatever it was Harry said at the end of the last chapter... Blah.  Second ending I'd change is The Mortal Instruments series by Cassandra Clare.  I don't know about you guys, but I really liked the way City of Glass had ended and am not all that happy about where the series is headed now, even if Clare planned it that way.  (And yet, I'll continue to buy and read the books because I like her writing so much -sigh-.)

What about you?

  1. Yipes, this makes me sad and a little worried about reading CoFA in the TMI series, now that you've said this. I absolutely loved how CoG ended as well too. I thought it was fantastic, but I'm definitely going to continue reading.

  2. Hopping through. I'm with you on Mortal Instruments. While I'm happy to read more about them in COFA, I did think City of Glass was an ideal ending.

  3. I loved the Harry Potter series but admittedly I have to agree with you. The ending could have benefited from a few extra chapters, or books... LOL

  7. Cool thoughts.

I wanted to have a longer epilogue for HP, thought it was cool how they included what was there in the movie though! :)

  8. I feel the same way! I wish there weren't any more books in the Mortal Instruments series. I just loved the ending of City of Glass!

  9. I hadn't really thought about the TMI books, but it's true. I didn't love the first 3, but I thought the ending was good. Adding books almost feels a little forced.
    Anyway, happy Friday!

  11. Hmm. I have just finished reading City of Ashes so I don't really know what to expect two books ahead. I will keep on reading to find out though. I personally liked the epilogue in the Harry Potter books. I thought that it was fitting to explain what happened instead of us having to fill in the blanks, but I also understand what you mean. Nice answer! Feel free to check out my FF here. New follower!

  12. Being the maverick that I am, I penciled in my own addition to this week’s Follow Friday question and then answered it.

Change the ending of a book? No way, no how.

From the perspective of a reader – it never even dawned on me. As a writer I find the notion sacrilegious.

Wait! I can explain! Follow me back to my blog for all the verbosity – http://www.howardsherman.net
