I'm reaching that point in the month/year where I need to take a break from YA and expand into adult fiction. I've read a few YA books recently (Throne of Glass, Team Human, Endlessly, Beta, Rift) and will be writing and posting those reviews here -- so yes, this site will still focus on YA.
But expanding into adult literature is kind of daunting. I know the really, really, really big name authors but I don't generally know many other adult authors. I recently read A Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness and its sequel, Shadow of Night, and loved both books -- the science/paranormal/philosophy/history/etc. + developed characters + believable romance + author who isn't afraid to make the reader work -- though they were a bit slow for me too. I own The Night Circus and am planning on reading that one soon as well as Melissa de la Cruz's Serpent's Kiss. Can you recommend me a book that you've recently read & enjoyed?
Some of my recent favs in YA have been: Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor, Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo, Grave Mercy by Robin LaFevers, Uncommon Criminals by Ally Carter, The Golden Lily by Richelle Mead, Arcadia Awakens by Kai Meyer, & For Darkness Shows the Stars by Diana Peterfreund.
Please help a girl out :D.
[No non-fiction please!]
[Preferably book has romance!]
Hey! So I'm venturing into the world of adult fiction as well because I joined Tynga's Reviews as a reviewer. While my focus is YA, I am posting some adult reviews every now and then. Next Wednesday, my review for the first adult book that I've read in a while is going up. I absolutely adored it and it was legitimately hilarious. The romance was intense and the snarky remarks by the main character kept you reading. I'd recommend First Grave on the Right by Darynda Jones. If you want to wait, I'll try to remember to link you to my review next week (:
ReplyDeleteDo you like the shows Bones or Castle? The books related to the series are pretty good. I've read the first in each. The ones that inspired Bones are a lot different than the show but still have the same crime/forensic element to them. And the Castle books are pretty much the show wrapped up into a book.
ReplyDeleteI don't read too much adult fiction though, these two are among the few I've read. I really need to expand my adult fiction reads myself. Hope you can find some good ones! :)
There are so many great Adult books, I review a lot of Adult books, most being small press that are great! My recommendations are these; I love all of S.A. Price's books. The dragon Elemental series is fantastic! If you like dark humor I high recommend Mark Henry's Amanda Feral series (get in paperback, there are footnotes that gets wonky with ecopies). Laura Wright's Mark of the Vampire series is fab! Ooh and Elle Jasper's Dark Ink Chronicles is a personal fav. So many I could go on and on. If your curious about any of these titles you could check out my reviews here, http://allthefunstartsafterdark.blogspot.com/p/reviews-z.html
ReplyDeleteI recommend you take a look at Angieville's recommendations. Judging from the kind of stuff you like, I think you'd like the books she likes, and she reads a lot of adult as well as YA, especially in fantasy, which you seem to enjoy.
ReplyDeleteI just finished a book called Slipstream by Michael Offutt. The main character is only 17, but really the tone of the story is much more adult. It's a sci-fi. You can see my review here: http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/354826254
ReplyDeleteI guess you're going to like Wicked as They Come by Delilah S. Dawson. It's a mix of time (or space?) travel, fantasy, vampire, circus, magic, steampunk and romance. Have you ever heard of bludbunnies? The cute little thing that actually sucks blood. And bludmen? That's right. The whole magical adventure is all begun when Leticia (the main character) discovers a mysterious locket in an old attic... and what happens after that, well, you guess. Adventure.
