Lush on Thursday

Lush on Thursday is essentially the spotlight feature here at Christina Reads YA. For a further explanation of what the feature means, read my first ever LoT post :).

Today's pick is...

These Broken Stars by Meagan Spooner and Amie Kaufman
Release Date: December 10, 2013
Published by: Disney-Hyperion

It's a night like any other on board the Icarus. Then, catastrophe strikes: the massive luxury spaceliner is yanked out of hyperspace and plummets into the nearest planet. Lilac LaRoux and Tarver Merendsen survive. And they seem to be alone.

Lilac is the daughter of the richest man in the universe. Tarver comes from nothing, a young war hero who learned long ago that girls like Lilac are more trouble than they’re worth. But with only each other to rely on, Lilac and Tarver must work together, making a tortuous journey across the eerie, deserted terrain to seek help.

Then, against all odds, Lilac and Tarver find a strange blessing in the tragedy that has thrown them into each other’s arms. Without the hope of a future together in their own world, they begin to wonder—would they be better off staying here forever?

Everything changes when they uncover the truth behind the chilling whispers that haunt their every step. Lilac and Tarver may find a way off this planet. But they won’t be the same people who landed on it.

The first in a sweeping science fiction trilogy, These Broken Stars is a timeless love story about hope and survival in the face of unthinkable odds.

So I really dislike this cover, and I think I may be the only one in the blogosphere who does. The title font is definitely gorgeous, but the author cursive font looks weird with it as does the font for the blurb. The stars look kind of tacky to me, and honestly? When I see two white people dressed as fancily as that and doing something as ridiculously cliche as reaching for each other, it makes me think of privilege (and the stories in YA that are filled with it), and makes me wonder whether I'll like their POVs. Yes, I am being very judgmental, but also to make a point, which is...

The power of book bloggers prevails, and the weight of the cover fades away in light of the story - AKA why this title looks awesome:

  • Science fiction trilogy. I've heard that this one is not so focused on sci-fi - in fact, the publisher's marketing point on Edelweiss is: "ACCESSIBLE, GIRL-FRIENDLY SCI-FI: this genre is poised to grow, and this gripping, romantic novel is a perfect candidate to capitalize on this hot new trend." - but I still want to see what kind of world the authors have built out in space and on this new planet.
  • Romance. Yeah, I'm a romance addict. What can I say? The tragic element - I've seen this book compared to the Titanic in space - can either be a major plus or negative.
  • Character-driven. Beth Revis blurbed the book, and the synopsis is giving me the feel of a character-driven book, and we've already established that all my favorite books are like that.
  • Bloggers are already raving about the book, specifically Wendy Darling and Kat Kennedy.

Now, if only Disney-Hyperion liked book bloggers and allowed us to request titles online...

What are you hoping to read soon? Is there a book you think I should read ASAP? Something you've read recently that you lovelovelove? Have you read These Broken Stars/are you anticipating it?

  1. Ha! I love how different perceptions are, I love this cover. But I totally see what you are saying about the blurb and author title font, that could be a little better for sure.

  2. I LOVE the cover but "girl friendly" is NOT okay. BLAH. *hiss*

(PS. Disney/Hyperion has been getting much better toward bloggers. If this one is on Edelweiss or NetGalley, you should request it. I recently was approved for one of their titles online, and they've sent me a few physical ARCs! So you never know.)

Thanks for stopping by my blog, girl. Have a GREAT Thursday!

  5. ha, well, maybe I'm reacting, too, to how everyone loved the cover and little ole me needed one sympathizer :D. And yay!! You agree with at least some part - the blurb & author font!

  6. I love the sounds of this one, and the cover beautiful. I can't wait to read it too. :)

  7. I hate whenever any publisher uses "boy" or "girl" friendly. Those arguments never sway me - as if the literature can't attract both sexes, or that girls would be any less interested in science!

Thanks for tip!! I may request Disney-Hyperion titles soon then :). I haven't seen this on Edelweiss or NG but have seen some others that look interesting.

    Have a great Thursday!! :)

  8. Yes, I was going to bring up "girl-friendly." Another thing that itches at me, besides what Christina has pointed out, is they make it seem like girls can't understand other sci-fis or something. It rather feels like an insult.

And about the cover, I agree about the fonts and the cliche pose, but I really do love her dress. :)

  9. It's funny because I always actually been okay with this book cover
until you pointed out what's wrong with it. Like the author's font? I
NEVER noticed it before. I have no idea how, but it's just lost in that
ginormous billowing dress I guess! And really, it is sort of tacky
with these two characters reaching out to each other like that.

    I'm
actually slightly disappointed that it's considered "girl-friendly
sci-fi" as well, with romance. I am not huge into romance, and what
    does "girl-friendly sci-fi" mean? Bleh.

    I love how you're
hoping to read this one but have sort of turned me off from reading it!
Haha. I'm sure if I start seeing positive reviews of it though and end
up getting my hands on it, I might change my mind... We'll see!

  10. The ginormous billowing dress is pretty distracting. I want that dress. And that color in some other piece of clothing.

I don't know what "girl-friendly" sci-fi means, but it makes me sad to see the publisher use that term. Ha--have I turned you off from reading it, or was it their marketing? Psh :P. I have seen mostly positive reviews so far, so don't get too turned off yet! :)

  11. If you like romance, you will love this one, girl!

  12. I'm not over the moon (heh) for this cover, either, but I am always drawn to books with stars on the cover. Also, I don't like "girl-friendly" sci-fi...I like REAL sci-fi. If this is too much like Glow or Across the Universe, I probably won't get very far with it. :(

  13. Really? You didn't think GLOW was real sci-fi? AtU was marketed as "sci-fi for people who don't like sci-fi," but I thought GLOW was better about the science fiction portions, and had a lot more character & political drama.
